In the recommendation, which was accepted by the Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, the Hill Zone will be broken into three zones; Northeast, East Central and Southwest. The Northeast Zone will include areas east of 1-55 and north of US 82. The East Central Zone will include areas east of 1-55, east of US 49, south of US 82, and north of US 84. The Southwest Zone will include areas east of US 61, south of 1-20, west of US 49, and west of Mississippi 35. The Delta and Southeast zones will remain the same.
Bag limits on antlerless deer will also be affected. In the Southeast Zone, the department has recommended reducing the limit from a total of three per season to one per day, not to exceed two per season. In all other zones, the antlerless bag limit will be reduced from five per season to three.
Antlerless bag limits on public land could see the most dramatic change. Under the proposal, antlerless harvests would be suspended except during archery only and youth gun seasons.
The proposal is currently in a 30 day comment period. Comments may be emailed to email@example.com or mailed to Hunting Seasons Rule Comment, 1505 Eastover Drive, Jackson, MS 39211.
