A deer came crashing through a driver’s windshield in Rockland this week after the animal was thrown into the air by a vehicle in the opposite lane — a bizarre crash that a fire dispatcher likened to “getting struck by lightning.”

The deer had been trying to cross VFW Drive around 6:30 p.m. before the crash, according to Rockland police spokesperson Jean Gianatassio. The deer, which wound up in a woman’s backseat died. The woman went to South Shore Hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the car that hit the deer was not injured.

A fire dispatcher said he had never seen a such a strange turn of events.

“Like any town, we have occasional encounters with deer. But I can’t remember anything like this. It’s pretty remarkable,” he said.
